GAME ARTIST: CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION
Drawings and 3D animations are important! But, for the Game Artist, it's fundamental to be able to integrate and optimise those graphic designs into a real-time video game engine while respecting the artistic direction!
THE GAME ARTIST'S MISSIONS & PROFESSION
Right behind the gameplay, a video game's design is the second most important factor in its success. Some video games try to look as realistic as possible, while others aim for a more stylized look. It is the Game Artist's job to model and texture characters and objects to achieve the right result.
Although computer graphics are at the core of this craft, video Game Artists still use traditional hand drawing at the very beginning of character development. They sketch preliminary designs, develop the sketches into forms as user-friendly as possible, and then transform the chosen sketches into 2D or 3D computer graphics.
REQUIREMENTS & SKILLS
The Game Artist is all about imagination, he / she is a professional who shows great visual imagination!
In order to become a Game Artist, you must have a thorough knowledge of computer modelling and animation. Working in the video game industry gives you a unique freedom to create new and original worlds.
The Game Artist is therefore capable of creating all kinds of graphic worlds, and masters traditional creative techniques as well as 2D and 3D digital techniques. The gamer is often unaware of the wealth of imagination a video game requires to have him riveted to his screen! It goes without saying that a good technical mastery allows the Game Artist to express himself / herself freely.
It is essential for the game artist to know how to use the technical tools of visual production to extend his creativity, but also to save time. Game Artists work with the Game Designer and are responsible for creating specific artistic resources within a game.
They can also create illustrations for packages, promotional material and websites. Some specialize in human character and character design, others in buildings and landscapes, and some in texturing of 3D objects.
They must keep in mind the technical capacities and limitations of the platform on which the game will be running.
