Coordinating and developing a video game project
HAVING AN IDEA IS IMPORTANT AND EVEN ESSENTIAL!
Transforming it into a project, making it technically viable and even making a profit out of it, is an approach that requires various skills and specifically the ability to estimate the cost of the project, and to bring it to life.
This is precisely where the Video Game Producer comes in. He is in charge of establishing and optimizing the production costs, thanks to his expertise
THE MISSIONS OF THE VIDEO GAME PRODUCER
"Money is the sinews of war", an aphorism popularized by François Rabelais in his work "Gargantua". The quotation goes back to 1534 but remains more relevant than ever, especially for Video Game Producers.
Indeed, as project and production managers, they have the task of supervising the entire production process and organizing the work of the entire team while respecting budgets and deadlines. They show confirmed financial skills, but not only... When they start a projet, they first contribute to the game design and also analyse the market.
On their agenda: specifications (technical, graphic, supports, communication, marketing, etc...), with optimization of the positions, financial management (partners, crowdfounding). In a way, they help the artists to make their project viable and always keep an eye on it to prevent any slippage.
Overall, the Producer sets the budget : he foresees the costs, prepares very precise production schedules with the different departments (animators, game designers, programmers, human resources, marketing, press relations, contractors, journalists, etc.).
He manages and coordinates the activities but also guarantees the quality of the completed game, and the full achievement of the objectives.
HIS / HER KNOW-HOW, HIS / HER KNOWLEDGE
Obviously, Video Games Producer is a position that involves a great deal of interpersonal skills. Indeed, the interactions between the different professional units are necessary for the achievement of the project, and requires a greater sense of organization. Everyone involved in the project relies on him: he is a key player!
Therefore, a good managerial experience and a thorough knowledge of the market are compulsory, if not essential.
Technical expertise, an ability to manage teams with subtlety, to make decisions (financial, technical, marketing, etc.), a high level of requirement, composure, and good stress management.
CAREERS, SALARIES AND OPPORTUNITIES
Usually, the Producer has previously held other positions in the video game industry.
Depending on his / her tastes and professional opportunities, it is often through a technical, artistic or even financial background that he / she becomes a Producer.
Some producers have a technical background (engineer), others are generalists, there are no rules. In any case, he / she is an experienced video game professional given the responsibilities involved.
This is the objective of ETPA's video game training program: it allows young creative people to acquire the basics of the video game industry during a three-year course of high technicality.
HOW MUCH DOES A VIDEO GAME PRODUCER EARN?
Experience, versatility and responsibility mean a corresponding salary. His / her salary ranges from €30,000 to €45,000 (minimum €18,000; maximum €70,000; median €33,000).
On a monthly basis, and at the beginning of his / her career, the Producer earns the equivalent of €3,000 gross per month.
Eventually, he may consider setting up his own business, and opening his own agency.
