In order to allow video game enthusiasts to train in optimal conditions and to consider their professional future in the best possible way, ETPA has created in 2012 its training course in Video Games.
As a leader, the artistic director participates in the creative process of the project by initiating, supervising and ensuring its successful completion. He must be able to ensure harmony and coherence at all levels of visual creation.
"The goal here is to bring both specific and technical knowledge by sharpening the students' 'common sense' so that the techniques learned are not a simple tool but a resource for the overall vision of a project.

Today, many tools allow game designers to express their creativity. One of them, 3D, offers the possibility to develop unlimited universes where freedom for the players is required.
Our teaching is based on a triptych :

We have adapted our teaching so that our students' knowledge is in line with what the studios are looking for. 3 YEARS TO BECOME VIDEO GAME PROFESSIONALS
At ETPA, video game training is clearly aimed at professionalizing. Enabling our students to acquire all the skills and knowledge required to turn their passion into their future occupation is our #1 goal! Also, the training, in addition to providing a whole theoretical background necessary to understand and acquire a large number of concepts, is above all practical!
Through projects and real-life situations, students practice their new technical skills, while refining their artistic and creative identity.
With its training, ETPA wants to give its students time to discover in detail every aspect of the video game design process. Also, and although the 3 years of study are aimed at training generalists, ETPA graduates are able to specialize very quickly in one or another area of video games, a characteristic that makes them professionals who stand out for their skills, expertise and great flexibility.
Enough to allow video game enthusiasts to find their way, and to blossom in their chosen field. For it is indeed the future generations of game designers, level designers, game artists, UI and UX designers and gameplay developers that ETPA trains in its establishments of Montpellier, Toulouse and Rennes!
CREATIVITY AND TECHNICAL SKILLS AT THE HEART OF THE TRAINING
When students enter ETPA's training, they often have a rather fragmented and fantasized vision of the video game industry. Therefore, ETPA, in addition to allowing them to acquire a large number of artistic and technical skills, gives them the opportunity to set foot in a very concrete way in the video game industry.
In this way, they discover a new world, refine their knowledge of the jobs they can aspire to when they leave school, and clarify their career plans over time.
YEAR 1: EXPLORING THE FUNDAMENTALS
During the first year of the course, students are truly immersed in the world of video games, and steeped in this fascinating universe. This year will enable them to assimilate a few fundamentals in terms of video game design, and to integrate both artistic and technical skills.
To this end, students will have to design graphic environments, bring settings and characters to life, and consider their evolution in their virtual reality. Also, the practice of drawing, graphic design, modeling, and lighting are basic skills that students must master by the end of this first year.
These learnings are completed by a whole section dedicated to the basics of programming, to the understanding of the video game's mechanisms and codes, as well as to the mastery of design software.
YEAR 2: DEEPENING AND PRACTICAL APPLICATION
During this second year, the technical learning is further deepened, and students can put their knowledge into practice on many occasions. This second year focuses on real-time 3D game engines, and allows students to create their first video games, both on desktop and mobile devices.
The study of programming languages, and more specifically gameplay programming, outlines this year's course, which allows students to further increase their skills and expertise in video game design.
It is also in this dynamic that the school organizes multiple workshops and conferences throughout the year, led by video game professionals. These shared experiences are also an opportunity for students to develop their network and prepare their entry into the job market.
YEAR 3: THE BEGINNINGS OF THE PROFESSIONAL LIFE
The 3rd year of training is organized in 2 stages. During the 1st semester, students will improve their technical knowledge by learning new tools, including digital sculpture, texturing, and programming tools.
This first phase represents the last stage of learning, and concludes several months of intensive artistic and technical teaching.
As for the 2nd semester, it includes the creation of a video game project, from start to finish. This opportunity, which consists of a real professional situation, allows the student to apply the full extent of his / her knowledge, to experiment the theoretical and practical skills acquired during the training, and to demonstrate all his / her graphic and technical expertise.
This video game creation project also allows the student to assume the role of project leader, thus adopting a global vision and a critical look at his / her own choices.
CREATIVE AND TECHNICAL CAREERS
Upon graduation from ETPA, students are ready to integrate the wide range of structures that can rely on their skills. Video game studios and publishers, digital communication agencies, and tech companies are just some of the organizations that ETPA graduates will be able to work with.
As a matter of fact, it is with their help that the school's pedagogical team updates every year the video game training program. Because as a school, we believe it is essential to meet the needs of professionals and to understand their daily challenges.
