THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF VIDEO GAMES IS IN CHARGE OF THE ARTISTIC IDENTITY OF HIS / HER COMPANY, AND HE / SHE ENSURES THAT THE PROJECT MEETS THE CLIENT'S EXPECTATIONS: HE / SHE IS THE CREATIVE ELEMENT THAT IS ESSENTIAL TO ANY PROJECT.

 

THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR'S MISSIONS


What is the scope of a Creative Director of Video Games? Here is an overview of his / her fields of intervention.

  • First of all, he analyses the client's needs and transmits them to his production teams.
  • Then, he proposes an artistic orientation and observes, analyses and selects the designers' best projects.
    Finally, the Creative Director exposes the projects to the clients and defends them by explaining his strategy, his method and justifying his choices.
  • In a second phase, he drives the artistic direction of the selected projects by animating and guiding his teams (expertise of each one, reflection, suggestions, etc.). He cultivates creativity within his team.

Ultimately, the director has to consider all the game's facets. He must develop a complete, innovative and coherent virtual reality, without neglecting any aspect of the story, settings, characters or situations.

HIS/HER KNOW-HOW, HIS/HER KNOWLEDGE


It is stating the obvious, but it is clear that the Creative Director must have a good knowledge of the video game market (awareness for evolutions, social network trends, users' behaviours) and new technologies with all its current components, in order to create a successful game.

 

Above all, he / she is passionate, and creative. He / she must demonstrate imagination, innovation and anticipation, but also method in project management.

His / her force of persuasion, his / her ability to interact with ease in personal relationships are essential, especially when it comes to standing up for projects in front of clients. His / her ability to communicate his artistic choices in a convincing manner is essential.

This position is accessible after significant experience in the video game industry.

Therefore, a recognised training course in video games as offered over 3 years at ETPA (Toulouse, Montpellier, Rennes) is the best guarantee of acquiring the technical and creative fundamentals for a positive career development.

CAREERS, SALARIES AND OPPORTUNITIES

You need to have a certain amount of experience to be fully involved in the Creative Director's role, as this job combines different skills.

THE SALARY OF A JUNIOR CREATIVE DIRECTOR IS AROUND €1,950.

In terms of career development, it is estimated that salaries range between €42k and €60k (minimum €20k - maximum €92k - median salary: €31k).

Depending on his or her skills and opportunities, the Creative Director may consider moving up to PGD/CEO/CEO positions.
